Addiction Recovery Yoga
Yoga can help people in recovery find a new non-addictive identity through self-awareness and mental resilience.
The Practice
Yoga is a complementary therapy to health interventions like detox support, counseling, in-patient treatment, talk therapy, 12-step programs, and self-help groups. It’s a mindfulness practice that uses physical exertion to bring awareness to the present moment, right where your feet (or hands) are planted. With consistent practice, many people experience a gradual removal of attachments, release of dependence on external stimuli, and inspiration to pursue a more intentional lifestyle.
The Student
Students have the freedom to choose how they participate: full asana practice, observing, leaving class, or changing their mind halfway through. It’s important for each participant to maintain their agency while adhering to house guidelines. Classes are adapted to the individual as much as possible in a group environment.
The Result
Recovery, much like yoga, is a journey and not a progression. Yoga doesn’t guarantee unbroken sobriety. Relapse is a part of many people’s path to sobriety. We want our students to accept gradual improvement rather than perfection, owning occasional setbacks that may occur. The combination of yoga, breath practices, and a 12-step program can equip individuals with tools to navigate cravings and resist pressures while in treatment and as they re-enter society.
